Malé is one of the most densely populated cities on earth, built onto every metre of a very small island. Almost every city hotel in the country is here or in Hulhumalé, and no resorts are.

Most visitors see it for a few hours between flights. It repays a day: the fish market, the Friday Mosque with its coral-stone walls, and a grid you can cross on foot in twenty minutes.
